Using the image analysis of ACC 32 software, total root surface was calculated and active water absorbing root surface approximately determined for six trees both in the limed and control localities. In order to obtain root samples, a horizontal outcrop was done using the method of monoliths in the profile of a transversal transect adjacent to the tree basis. Roots from the monoliths were rinsed on sieves and scanned with the CCD Oskar camera at the resolution of 600 x 800 pixels. Different levels of forest soil rooting through with a dominant spruce, intermediate spruce, dominant beech and intermediate beech, 19 years old on average, were observed in the localities under study. The results of measurements have shown that beech roots in the control locality penetrated to a greater depth of the soil profile and total active surface of beech roots was larger in the limed locality. In the limed locality, the depth of rooting through for the beech was 20-25 cm greater than that for the spruce. In the control locality, the entire soil profile was rooted through by the spruce and beech. In this locality, a significantly greater water absorbing surface of beech roots was observed and determined in the lower soil horizons. In the limed locality, the largest water absorbing root surfaces of the beech and spruce were found in the upper soil horizons. If we compare the amount of beech and spruce root biomass in the limed locality, we can see that in the upper horizons there was more spruce root biomass and in the lower ones there was more beech root biomass. Biomass of roots growing in surface layers was higher, the beech to spruce ratio was lower. Lower soil horizons were little rooted through or nearly without roots.
