This paper presents an approach to the assessment of the potential for sustainable use of cultural landscapes based on their physical conditions and history of land use development. The most stable areas (which have experienced no change in land use throughout the study period) as identified by multitemporal analyses of historical maps, were overlaid with physical conditions in the form of a geo-complex model, constituted of data relating to geology, climate, soil conditions, slope, aspect and potential natural vegetation. Using the formula of relative frequencies of areas land use forms, multiplied with relative frequencies of the physical condition within the land use forms, we produced a so-called affinity of land use form to physical conditions index (Affinity Index). This Affinity Index was used to assess the land form potential of the geocomplex. A comparison of present and proposed land use patterns could be employed as a tool with which to assess the potential for the sustainable management of landscapes which takes into account aspects of the cultural landscape.
