Within the framework of the project Environmental assessment of alternatives for supplying drinking water for Presov and Kosice area the drinking water policy of the East-Slovakian region was developed (Elek et al., 1994) and then evaluated from the viewpoint of presumed environmental impacts (Kozova et al., 1995). Environmental assessment of the drinking water policy presents one of the first examples of applying the article 35 of the National Council of the Slovak Republic Act No. 127/1994 on environmental impact assessment. The article 35 of this Act requires evaluation of substantial development policies from the viewpoints of their presumed impacts on environment. The paper mentions basic principles and aims of the variant solutions of drinking water policy for East-Slovakian region though the year 2015 and the main results of evaluation of presumed impacts on environment.
