Agriculture differs from various occupations by whole range of respiratory hazards. The airborne contaminants in livestock confinements can be divided into two categories: gases and particulates, which come from animals, bedding materials, foodstuff, microorganisms, etc. To the principle gases of this environment belong ammonia, hydrogen sulfate and methane which arise from the microbial degradation of manure, and carbon dioxide which is generated as a result of animal and microbial respiration. Airborne organic dust consists of plant materials, animal-derived particles (skin, hair, and feathers), bacteria, fungi, mites and other arthropods, food additives, microbial toxins, etc. After the exposure to airborne contaminants mentioned, the agricultural workers may be attacked by respiratory disorders, such as irritation of upper and lower respiratory tract, toxic pneumonitis, organic dust toxic syndrome (ODTS), hypersensitivity pneumonitis, chronic bronchitis, asthma, etc.
